Verified on release 3.4.5.21 "Trade Management for Kazakhstan" (edition 3.4).
You post a goods receipt, and the program puts it on account 1310 "Raw Materials and Supplies" instead of 1330 "Goods". The turnover balance sheet is a mess: purchases for resale sit as materials, and the cost of goods sold isn't written off to 7010 at the time of sale. You go into the item card — and the "Inventory Type" field has the wrong value set. It's exactly this catalog that determines which account each item posts to and how it behaves during receipt, transfer, and sale. Let's figure out how it's structured and how to set it up once so that postings are generated automatically.
1. Purpose
"Inventory Types" is a classifier that divides your item list into groups for regulated accounting: goods, materials, finished products, containers, goods on commission. Each type is linked to accounting accounts and income/expense accounts. It's the inventory type, not the item name, that determines the postings on receipt and sale.
2. Where to find it
- Section: "Master Data and Administration" → "Master Data and Section Settings" → "Items" → "Inventory Types" link. In some builds the list opens from "Financial Result and Controlling" → "Accounting Settings" → "Item Accounting Account Setup".
- From the item card: the "Inventory Type" field — the selection arrow opens the same catalog.
- Direct 1C navigation link:
e1cib/list/Справочник.ВидыЗапасов. Copy it, click "Tools" → "Go to navigation link" (or Ctrl+Shift+F in some builds) and paste it — the list will open immediately.
2a. How to check your release
"Help" → "About" (or the i icon in the top right corner). In the window that opens, the top line is the platform version (e.g., 8.3.24), below it is "Trade Management for Kazakhstan, edition 3.4 (3.4.5.21)". This guide is written for release 3.4.5.21. If you have a different one, field locations and some settings may differ.
3. How to fill it out
Open the catalog, click "Create". There aren't many fields, but each one affects the postings.
| Field | Required | Why it matters and what happens if you get it wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Name | ✅ Yes | How the inventory type appears in lists and the item card. Make it descriptive: "Goods for Resale", "Materials", "Returnable Containers". If named vaguely ("Type 1"), the warehouse worker and accountant will pick at random — it will end up on the wrong account. |
| Inventory Type | ✅ Yes | The key field. You choose from a predefined list: Goods, Materials, Finished Products, Semi-finished Products, Containers, Returnable Containers, Goods Received on Commission, Goods Transferred on Commission, Equipment for Installation. The type determines how the item behaves in warehouse and financial registers and on balance/off-balance accounts. An error here means an item for sale is accounted for as material and doesn't produce correct cost of goods sold. |
| Inventory Account | ✅ Yes (for regulated accounting) | The balance sheet account where the value posts on receipt: 1330 for goods, 1310 for raw materials and supplies, 1320 for finished products, 1350 for other inventory. Wrong account — the "Inventory" section of the balance sheet is distorted. |
| Sales Revenue Account | ✅ Yes | Usually 6010 "Revenue from Sale of Products and Services". Pulled in as the credit account of the revenue posting on sale. |
| Cost of Sales Account | ✅ Yes | 7010 "Cost of Products Sold and Services Rendered". The inventory value is written off to this account on shipment. |
| Off-balance Accounting / Commission | Depends on type | For commission and consignment types, off-balance sheet accounting is enabled — someone else's goods shouldn't end up on your balance sheet. |
| Group (parent) | ❌ No | The catalog is hierarchical. Group items for convenience; it doesn't affect postings. |
Procedure: Name → select Inventory Type → check that the accounting, revenue, and cost of sales accounts are populated → "Save and Close". Then in the item card (or via "Set Inventory Type" batch processing) assign the type to items.
Practical tip: don't create an inventory type "for every item". 4–6 types are enough for the whole database. Split by type only when you need different accounting accounts or a different tax treatment.
4. Worked example with postings
You created the inventory type "Goods for Resale": type — Goods, accounting account — 1330, revenue — 6010, cost of sales — 7010. Assigned it to the item "VVG Cable 3×2.5".
Receipt. Document "Purchase of Goods and Services": 100 m at 5,000 ₸ = 500,000 ₸, VAT 16% = 80,000 ₸, total 580,000 ₸. Since the inventory type = "Goods", the program generates:
| Debit | Credit | Amount, ₸ | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1330 | 3310 | 500,000 | Goods received to the account from the inventory type |
| 1420 | 3310 | 80,000 | VAT for offset (16%) |
The supplier is required to issue an ESF (electronic invoice) in the ESF IS and, if the item is on the list, issue an SNT (waybill) — you accept them in the "Electronic Documents" section.
Sale. Sold 100 m at 8,000 ₸ = 800,000 ₸ + VAT 16% = 128,000 ₸, total 928,000 ₸. The inventory type supplied the revenue and cost of sales accounts:
| Debit | Credit | Amount, ₸ | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1210 | 6010 | 800,000 | Sales revenue (account from inventory type) |
| 1210 | 3130 | 128,000 | VAT payable (16%) |
| 7010 | 1330 | 500,000 | Cost of sales written off from 1330 to 7010 |
Note: not a single account in the postings was entered manually. Everything came from the "Goods for Resale" inventory type. If you had set the type to "Materials" there, the item would have landed on 1310, and 7010 would not have been generated correctly on sale.
5. Use cases (inventory types)
The catalog isn't a document — it has no "transaction types" — but the inventory type sets the accounting scenario:
- Goods — buying and selling, account 1330, cost of sales to 7010.
- Materials / Raw Materials — account 1310, written off to production or expenses.
- Finished Products — 1320, received from production.
- Semi-finished Products — 1330-group/1340, for further processing.
- Containers, Returnable Containers — separate accounting, often without a VAT effect on sale.
- Goods on Commission (received/transferred) — off-balance sheet accounting, someone else's property doesn't end up on your balance sheet.
- Equipment for Installation — for installation, not for resale.
6. What this catalog generates
The catalog itself doesn't post anything — the movements are generated by the documents that reference it. The inventory type controls:
- Postings in "Purchase", "Sale", "Transfer", "Write-off", "Capitalization" — which accounting, revenue, and cost of sales accounts are used.
- Registers: "Goods in Warehouses", "Cost of Goods", "Sales Revenue and Cost", "Other Expenses" — the inventory type serves as an analytic.
- Indirectly — ESF and SNT: the inventory classification and item origin attribute affect how the virtual warehouse and SNT lines are filled on shipment, although the electronic documents themselves are generated by sale/transfer documents, not the catalog.
7. Printed forms
The catalog has no printed forms of its own — it's a classifier. You can check how the inventory type worked via reports:
- Account Turnover Balance Sheet (1330, 1310, 7010, 6010).
- Goods in Warehouses Statement.
- Cost of Goods.
- Gross Profit (by inventory type).
8. Common mistakes
"Accounting account not filled in for item / inventory type" — when posting a receipt. Reason: the inventory type has no account 1330 (or other) specified. Open the inventory type, fill in the accounting, revenue, and cost of sales accounts, and repost the document.
"'Inventory Type' field not filled in" in the item card. An item without an inventory type won't post to regulated accounting. Assign a type — manually or via the "Set Inventory Type" batch processing from the item list.
Item posted to 1310 instead of 1330. The inventory type has "Materials" selected. Create the correct type with "Goods" and reassign the items, then repost the documents for the period.
Commission goods ended up on the balance sheet. For goods received on commission you need a type with the corresponding type and off-balance sheet accounting. Otherwise someone else's goods inflate your inventory and VAT.
Duplication of types. Created 30 types "for every brand" — the accounts are the same, but the reports are unreadable. Keep only as many types as there are actually different accounts and tax scenarios.
9. FAQ
1. What's the difference between "Inventory Type" and "Item Type"? Item type defines the properties and category of the item (goods/service, set of attributes), while inventory type defines the accounting accounts for regulated accounting. These are two different catalogs that work together.
2. Can the inventory type of an item be changed retroactively? Yes, but after the change you need to repost the documents for the period, otherwise the old transactions will remain on the previous accounts and the turnover balance sheet won't reconcile.
3. Which account should be used for goods for resale? 1330 "Goods". Revenue — 6010, cost of sales — 7010. For raw materials and supplies — 1310, for finished products — 1320.
4. Why isn't the cost of sales generated on a sale? Most often the inventory type has no cost of sales account (7010) filled in, or the inventory type isn't "Goods"/"Products". Check the type's card and repost the sale.
5. Does the inventory type affect the VAT rate? No. The VAT rate (16% in 2026) is set in the item and documents. The inventory type is responsible only for the accounting and cost of sales accounts.
6. How to account for commission goods? Create a separate inventory type with the "Goods Received on Commission" type — it's tracked on an off-balance sheet account and doesn't end up on your balance sheet or affect input VAT.
7. How many inventory types are needed in the database? Usually 4–6: goods, materials, finished products, containers, commission. More are created only if different accounts or tax scenarios are needed.
8. Does the catalog generate an ESF or SNT? The catalog itself doesn't. Electronic documents (ESF in the ESF IS, SNT) are generated by sale and transfer documents. But correct inventory classification helps correctly fill in the virtual warehouse and SNT lines.
9. Can an unused inventory type be deleted? Mark it for deletion and run "Delete Marked Objects". If the type is used in posted documents, the program won't allow deletion while references exist.
10. Where can inventory types be assigned to items in bulk? In the item list, select items → "More" → batch change of the "Inventory Type" attribute. This avoids having to open every card.
